Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal but Signals Possibility of Further Talks With Tehran

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz but said the possibility of renewed negotiations with Tehran remains.

Speaking to US news platform Axios, Trump said Iran wanted to reach a deal, but its latest proposal was not an agreement the United States was willing to accept.

Trump said Iran had “gone too far” with its position, adding that the proposal might have been acceptable to Washington a year ago.

Iran recently presented the United States with a seven-day plan that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations.

According to Iranian officials, the proposal was conveyed to US officials through mediators. Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday.

However, in his latest remarks, Trump said he expected further talks with Iran.

US and regional sources said mediating countries, including Qatar, were continuing contacts between Washington and Tehran. Indirect negotiations could also resume as early as Monday, according to the sources.
