Political Activity Intensifies in London as Law Minister Meets Zardari Over Constitutional Amendments

LONDON: Political activity among Pakistan’s top leadership has intensified in London, with key political figures holding consultations over proposed constitutional amendments, according to sources.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has reportedly held an important meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari in London, sources said.

According to the sources, the meeting focused on a draft of the proposed constitutional amendments and efforts to take the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) into confidence over the proposed legislation.

Sources said the government and the PPP also discussed ways to move forward with consultations on the proposed amendments, while efforts are underway to brief the PPP leadership on key constitutional and political matters.

The sources further claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have directed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and provincial minister Nasir Hussain Shah to reach London at the earliest.

The presence of several senior Pakistani political leaders in London has triggered speculation about a series of high-level political consultations. According to a report published by Daily Jang, Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif are currently in London, while Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also arrived there earlier.

The reported discussions have drawn attention to constitutional reform, provincial autonomy and the distribution of powers between the federal government and provinces.

The 18th Constitutional Amendment remains one of Pakistan’s most significant constitutional reforms, particularly because of the greater autonomy and powers it transferred to the provinces.

However, there has been no official confirmation so far regarding the reported new draft, its contents, or the specific agenda of the alleged meeting between Tarar and Zardari. The claims are therefore being attributed to sources pending official confirmation. The latest political contacts in London could have significant implications for the government-PPP relationship and the broader debate over constitutional reforms in Pakistan.
