ISLAMABAD: An opposition parties’ meeting in Islamabad discussed PTI’s proposal to resign from Parliament, with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman opposing the move, sources said.
According to sources, most PTI lawmakers also agreed that Parliament should not be abandoned and that the opposition should use the parliamentary forum effectively before taking to the streets.
Fazlur Rehman reportedly asked whether PTI would also resign from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly if it left Parliament. He also questioned whether PTI would end its government in the province.
PTI leaders remained silent on the questions, according to sources.
The meeting agreed to give the government a tough time on quorum and legislation. Opposition parties also agreed to coordinate their strategy in the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies.
A joint strategy will be prepared after reviewing the government’s agenda, sources said.
The meeting also proposed forming an opposition constitutional committee if the government brings any constitutional amendment. The committee is expected to include Kamran Murtaza, Salman Akram Raja, Senator Ali Zafar and others.
A separate political affairs committee will include Maulana Ghafoor Haideri, Asad Qaiser, Raja Nasir and Aamir Dogar.
Sources said the opposition parties could not reach consensus on launching a joint movement outside Parliament.
The parties will consult their respective core committees and executive councils before deciding on street protests and public gatherings.
The meeting proposed that an anti-government movement should begin only after all opposition parties reach consensus.
Sources said the role of the Pakistan Peoples Party also came under discussion, with participants noting that the PPP is an ally of the PML-N government but remains hesitant about its political position.
Fazlur Rehman has also not yet agreed to participate in the September 27 long march, according to sources.
