Trump Spoke to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Last Week: Reuters

ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, last week, Reuters reported on Monday, citing Pakistani sources.

According to the news agency, the United States mainly sought Pakistan’s help in using its influence to bring Iran back to the negotiating table.

Two Pakistani sources told Reuters that the call was initiated by President Trump last week. However, the sources did not provide details about the exact issues discussed during the conversation.

Reuters said it remains unclear what Trump and Field Marshal Asim Munir discussed during the call beyond the reported US request concerning Iran.

The White House press secretary’s office did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The reported contact comes as Washington seeks diplomatic avenues to engage Iran, with Pakistan potentially playing a role because of its close regional ties and its diplomatic channels with Tehran.

Pakistan has previously offered to support dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

However, neither the US administration nor the Pakistani government has publicly confirmed details of the reported phone conversation.
