QUETTA ; An Additional District and Sessions Court in Quetta has handed down a life sentence to Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) member Gulzadi Baloch after finding her guilty of murder in a high-profile 2022 case.
Additional District and Sessions Judge-I, Ghulam Qadir Shah Bukhari, convicted Gulzadi Baloch under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code following the conclusion of trial proceedings and final legal arguments.
Muhammad Parvez Khokhar accused Gulzadi Baloch alongside co-accused Ganj Bibi, Agha Muhammad, and Abdul Wadood of killing his brother, Muhammad Azam.
The Wadood Satakzai Connection and Missing Persons Debate
The ruling has reignited intense debate regarding the “missing persons” narrative in Balochistan. Gulzadi Baloch is the sister of Abdul Wadood Satakzai, an individual whom the BYC, Dr. Mahrang Baloch, and Gulzadi herself had long campaigned for as an enforced disappearance case.
However, security and government sources note that Satakzai was killed in a 2024 encounter with security forces, after which the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) formally acknowledged him as one of its militants via social media. Officials point to such cases to highlight a broader trend where individuals previously labeled as missing persons later surface as operatives of proscribed militant organizations.
Broader Legal Backdrop for the BYC
This development follows other major judicial rulings involving key figures of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee:
-
Dr. Mahrang Baloch’s Conviction: In June 2026, a Quetta Anti-Terrorism Court sentenced Dr. Mahrang Baloch and Sibghatullah to life imprisonment for inciting a mob that resulted in the killing of FC soldier Shabbir Baloch during the Raji Muchi gathering in Gwadar.
-
Legal Status Observations: In previous rulings, courts have noted that the BYC is not a registered political entity and that constitutional rights to assembly remain subject to established legal limits.
The conviction of Gulzadi Baloch marks another significant chapter in the complex intersection of regional security, accountability, and political activism in Balochistan.
