US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington should pursue its own national interests in the Middle East and should not allow its foreign policy to become “subservient” to Israel.
Speaking at a conference organized by the All-In Podcast, Vance said Israel remains an important US partner, particularly in military technology and intelligence sharing. However, he stressed that the interests of the two countries do not always align.
Vance said the United States would work with Israel when the two countries share common interests but would pursue its own course when their interests differ. He said the central purpose of US foreign policy should be to protect American interests.
The vice president compared Washington’s relationship with Israel to its partnerships with NATO allies. He said having strong relationships with NATO members does not mean the United States makes its European foreign policy subordinate to NATO.
“In the same way, we cannot let our Middle Eastern foreign policy be subservient to the State of Israel,” Vance said.
Vance also highlighted differences that can emerge between the United States and Israel. He said President Donald Trump has shown a willingness to disagree with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when Washington believes US interests require a different approach.
His comments come amid ongoing US-Iran tensions and a wider debate over Washington’s Middle East policy and its relationship with Israel.
Vance has previously described Israel as one of America’s most important alliances while also acknowledging that the two countries do not agree on every issue.
