US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sent a letter to Iran’s National Security Council chief, Mohsen Rezaei, as part of efforts to revive peace negotiations and prevent a renewed military conflict, according to a US newspaper report.
The report said the letter discussed a possible roadmap for restarting negotiations and preventing large-scale military operations from resuming.
US officials believe direct communication with Iran’s hardliners could help secure more reliable and lasting diplomatic outcomes. According to the newspaper, Vance is also assessing whether a diplomatic framework could prevent potential US strikes on Iran after the midterm elections.
Trump Denies Directing Vance to Start Peace Talks
US President Donald Trump has denied instructing Vance to initiate peace negotiations with Iran.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, Trump said Vance’s communication with Iran concerned the provision of medical supplies.
Trump said Iran needed medical supplies, primarily to help people who were ill.
Iran Ready to Give Diplomacy Another Chance
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was prepared to give diplomacy another opportunity to succeed.
In a statement, Araghchi said Iran’s armed forces remained fully prepared to defend the country while diplomatic efforts continued.
He added that Iran was maintaining close contact with mediators to assess proposals that could lead to the implementation of its seven-day plan in less than a week.
Iran reportedly presented the plan through Qatar last month, offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear negotiations within a week.
In return, Tehran demanded an end to the US naval blockade, the lifting of restrictions on Iranian oil sales and a ceasefire covering Lebanon.
