The main accused in the Noor Mukadam murder case, Zahir Jaffer, has filed a petition in the court that he is mentally ill and instead of punishment, he should be given medical examination.
Zahir Jaffer’s lawyer Sikandar Zulqarnain filed the petition on behalf of his client in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Ata Rabbani on Wednesday. The petition has requested to establish a medical board in order to evaluate the accused’s ‘mental state’.
The petition states that the the way Zahir Jaffer ‘behaved’ before the court during past hearings reflects the mental state of the accused. The lawyer argued that the media has also reported the behavior of the main accused before the court.
Zahir’s use of media reports as a ladder to get away with his hideous crimes is an indication of how Jaffers have been maneuvering the case since the very beginning.
The petition of Zahir Zakir Jaffer further claims that it was due to his ‘insanity’ that Zahir did not respond when he was inducted by the court as he did not understand the court proceedings.
Zahir’s lawyer also accused the court of depriving him of the right to a fair trial and said that recording the statements of witnesses in the absence of the accused not only affects the trial but also violates Article 10A of the Constitution.
The Jaffers didn’t request to form a medical board for Zahir’s mental state at the beginning of the trial. After four months of careful scheming and unnecessary theatrics, Zahir has been declared mentally ill at this stage. It has become evident that the accused was taught to throw tantrums in the court so that he could ace the act of madness.
Zahir’s mother, Asmat Adamjee who set everything in her power at work to cover her son’s crimes before he was arrested, has already been granted. Just like the 19th century’s horror fiction “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, Noor’s murderer is convincing the court of his insanity while the details of his crimes tell otherwise.
