New Zealand Lawmaker Cycles To the Labor Room; Gives Birth to a Healthy Child

New Zealand women continue to surprise the world as this time a member of parliament (MP) cycled all the way to the hospital to deliver her own baby. Julie Anne was already in labour when she decided to pedal the bicycle and gave birth an hour later on Sunday.

Julie Anne Genter, who is an American-born New Zealand politician, is a member of the House of Representatives representing the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. Julie Ann announced in a Facebook post that she had given birth to her second child at 3 o’clock in the morning.

“We welcomed the newest member of our family. I genuinely wasn’t planning to cycle in labour, but it did end up happening,” Julie Ann wrote.

After the delivery, the politician posted many prepartum pictures of herself. In one of the pictures, she can be seen cycling, while another one shows her smiling in the car parking before giving birth to her child. She also posted a perfect happy family picture with her husband and newborn child.

“My contractions weren’t that bad when we left at 2am to go to the hospital, though they were 2-3 min apart and picking up in intensity by the time we arrived 10 minutes later,” Genter explained her out-of-the-way route to labor room.

The pictures of 41-year-old Julie An, show that she was not alone. She was accompanied by her husband who was also cycling.

New Zealand, a country with a population of 5 million, is known for its simplistic politicians, especially women. The country’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, took a maternity leave in 2018 during her tenure as prime minister. When her baby was only three months old, she breastfed him at a UN meeting.

Interestingly, Julie Ann Genter has been pushing for bicycles to solve transportation problems in the country. She also used a bicycle to go to the hospital for the birth of her first child.
