Shamima Begum, also known as ISIS bride, has said that the only crime she committed in her life was to travel to Syria on her own. A British girl of Bangladeshi origin, Shamima is facing the burden of joining the terrorist organization Islamic State.
Shamima was a schoolgirl of only 15 when she fled to Syria and joined the terrorist group ISIS. After spending years in the terrorist organization, she attempted to return to the United Kingdom in 2019. British Government, however, didn’t allow her return and instead revoked her British citizenship.
Currently, living in a refugee camp in Syria, Shamima has once again pleaded with the Boris Johnson government of Britain to allow her to return to Britain.
“I’m willing to fight them in a court of law, but I’m not being given a chance. I should be allowed to return to the UK and punished according to the country’s laws,” Begum said in a recent interview.
Talking about joining ISIS, Shamima claimed that she was misled by people she met online. She added that she was groomed for several months by older men before she fled to Syria.
“It wasn’t just a decision I made very quickly, it was a decision I thought about for a while,” Shamim confessed.
Talking about her life in the camp, she said that she was scared of living in the camp. Begum claimed that although her life in the camp wasn’t violent before, her ‘high profile’ might put a target on her back.
Shamima is alleged to be an expert in making jackets for ISIS attackers, although she denies this. Shamima was accompanied by two other young girls named Khadija Sultana and Amira Abase when she left for Syria from the UK airport in 2015. Khadija is said to have been killed in a bomb attack in Syria while there is no trace of Amira till now.
