First-Ever Public School For Transgenders Opens In Multan

For the first time in Pakistan, a public school for transgender people has been inaugurated in the city of Multan. The school is established under a pilot project “Transeducation” by the Government of Punjab.

Transeduction, a project for the transgender community, aims to provide a healthy and respectful educational environment for eunuchs. To compensate for the lost schooling of trans people, in the first phase Accelerated Learning Programme is implemented. Formal schooling will be provided in the second phase of the programme.

The milestone towards transgender welfare was lauded by transgender people across Multan. The newly enrolled trans students took their first class at a school located in the Gulgjasht area on Thursday, July 8.

The government of Punjab inaugurated the school which is established in a Government Girls Comprehensive Higher Secondary School of Multan.

According to South Punjab Education Secretary Dr Ehtesham Anwar, 18 students have been registered in the first phase. The classes are scheduled to be held from 4 pm to 6 pm. The evening timing has been set to facilitate both staff and students working in the morning.

In the first phase, the transgender school is providing classes from nursery to intermediate. After Intermediate, technical skills in cooking, beautician and tailoring will also be imparted to enable transgender people to work.

Currently, Students have been divided into four groups: primary, elementary secondary and higher secondary.

Punjab Education Minister Murad Ras said that in case of successful implementation of the project in Multan, the project would be extended to the whole of Punjab including Lahore, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.

A distinct uniform and uni gender shoes have been designed for the transgender students which are provided free of cost along with books and other stationery items. Free pick & drop service is also being arranged for further facilitation of the students with the help of the Special Education Department, Government of Punjab.
