Sourav Ganguly Receives Escalating Death Threats; Investigation launched

KOLKATA: Former India cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint after receiving alleged death threats targeting him, his wife Dona Ganguly and members of his staff.

The complaint was lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station in South Kolkata on Monday, August 10, 2026, following the discovery of two threatening letters at the office of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), where Ganguly currently serves as president.

Death Threat Letters Target Sourav Ganguly and Family

According to people familiar with the matter, derogatory and abusive letters had reportedly been sent to Ganguly’s Behala residence for around six months.

The communications were initially not treated as a serious security threat. However, concerns escalated after two letters received on Monday allegedly contained explicit threats against Ganguly and his family.

The letters, written in English, reportedly included threats to “eliminate” and “finish” Ganguly, his wife and people working with him.

Ganguly’s personal assistant, Taniya Bhattacharya, submitted the complaint on his behalf, urging police to investigate the matter immediately.

The complaint stated that the communications had escalated from hateful and derogatory remarks to direct threats to the lives and safety of Ganguly, Dona Ganguly and members of his staff.

Kolkata Police Investigate Courier and Phone Records

Kolkata Police have launched an investigation and are examining both the physical and digital trail linked to the threatening letters.

Preliminary findings suggest that the letters were sent through a local courier service. The sender’s details reportedly identified the person as “Arun Kumar”, with an address in Belgharia, North 24 Parganas.

Investigators are also examining a phone number mentioned in the correspondence. Police are tracking the SIM card associated with the number to determine whether the person named on the package actually sent the letters or whether someone used his identity.

Police Examine Six Months of Threatening Messages

Authorities are also reviewing previous letters and communications received by Ganguly over the past six months.

Investigators are trying to determine whether all the messages were sent by the same person and whether the latest threats are connected to the earlier abusive correspondence.

Police are expected to examine courier records, phone data and other available evidence as part of the investigation.

West Bengal Security Department Reviews Threat Perception

The West Bengal State Security Department has also been informed about the alleged threats and is assessing Ganguly’s current security arrangements.

Ganguly, one of India’s most prominent former cricketers and cricket administrators, currently has Y-category security cover.

Authorities are assessing whether additional security personnel or stronger protection around his residence and workplace is required.

Police have assured that necessary security measures are being taken to protect Sourav Ganguly, his wife Dona Ganguly and his staff as investigators work to identify the person behind the threatening letters.

Sourav Ganguly Death Threat Case: What Happens Next?

The investigation is now focused on identifying the sender, verifying the courier information and establishing whether the threats are part of a wider pattern of harassment.

Further action is expected once investigators establish the authenticity of the sender’s identity and determine the motive behind the alleged threats.
