Senior officials in the Trump administration are urging President Donald Trump to avoid further escalation of the Iran war until the November midterm elections, Reuters reported.
The officials fear that a further intensification of the conflict could hurt Republicans politically in the November 3 elections.
According to Reuters, the Trump administration is therefore considering a strategy to keep the Iran conflict relatively contained until the midterm vote, while continuing to maintain economic and military pressure on Tehran.
Officials believe that avoiding a major escalation before the elections could limit the political risks for Republicans. However, military action against Iran could be expanded after the November 3 elections if the administration decides that a tougher approach is necessary.
The report comes as U.S. and Iranian forces have continued exchanging strikes in recent days, raising concerns that even limited military action could trigger a wider escalation.
Reuters said the White House is also facing logistical pressures, including depleted U.S. munitions stockpiles, while some senior military officials have warned about the impact of a prolonged conflict on U.S. military readiness.
At the same time, Trump has warned Iran that any retaliation against recent U.S. strikes could trigger a much stronger American response.
The administration is increasingly relying on economic pressure and sanctions against Iran, while seeking to avoid a full-scale escalation ahead of the November elections.
