Pakistan Parliament Wins First Common wealth Parliamentary Association Green Mess Award

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Parliament has achieved a historic milestone by winning the first-ever Green Mess Award of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), in recognition of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability and green parliamentary practices.

The award was presented to the Parliament of Pakistan during the main programme of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq received the award on behalf of Pakistan’s Parliament.

Expressing gratitude on receiving the award, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said it was an honour for him to accept the Green Mess Award as Speaker of the National Assembly. He said the recognition reflected Parliament’s commitment to providing a cleaner and better environment for future generations.

“The Green Mess Award is not the destination; rather, it is a reaffirmation that further steps must continue to be taken for a sustainable environment,” the Speaker said.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the journey towards making Parliament a green institution had not been undertaken merely to receive an award, but stemmed from a sense of responsibility to ensure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

Pakistan’s Parliament was recognised for becoming the world’s first parliament to operate entirely on solar energy, along with the launch of a paperless parliamentary system and other environmentally friendly initiatives.

Conference participants also appreciated the use of electronic tablets in the National Assembly to digitise parliamentary proceedings and reduce reliance on paper-based processes.

The implementation of a rainwater harvesting project at Parliament House, Pakistan, was also highlighted as part of Parliament’s broader green initiatives.

Participants at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference described Pakistan’s Green Parliament initiative as a model that could be replicated by other parliaments across the Commonwealth.

The award marks international recognition of the environmental measures undertaken by the Parliament of Pakistan under the leadership of Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, particularly its transition to solar energy, paperless parliamentary operations, digitalisation of proceedings and other sustainability-focused measures.
