Egyptian Parliament Authorizes Military Support for Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions

CAIRO: The Egyptian Parliament has officially approved a request from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi authorizing military support to help defend Saudi Arabia, following escalating regional security challenges and ongoing Houthi attacks.
The legislative green light comes shortly after President El-Sisi, speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy in Cairo, vowed that Egypt would take all necessary steps to safeguard Saudi security. He emphasized that Cairo cannot remain silent if the Kingdom’s stability is threatened, stressing that any prospective military action or deployment would be strictly defensive in nature.
Following an emergency session called by President El-Sisi, Egypt’s National Defense Council backed the proposal, which subsequently secured a strong mandate from the parliament.
The strategic move highlights deeper security alignment between Cairo and Riyadh as regional shipping lanes face persistent threats. Continuous disruptions—including Houthi targeting of commercial vessels since 2023—have severely impacted regional trade, costing the Suez Canal approximately $11 billion in revenue and prompting close monitoring by all regional stakeholders.
