US politics is witnessing a unique trajectory. Despite the rise of populism and the resurgence of racism as well as xenophobia in the past few years, many women of color managed to garner significant positions. Perhaps that shows a staunch divide in the US society while giving a hope that things can get better from here.
The women of the subcontinent might still have a long way to go in claiming the high-profile positions in their home countries. But in the US, they are shattering the glass ceilings and reaching up to the high political ranks for several years. Here are these amazing women who are an inspiration for others and a sign that a woman can achieve anything and the stereotypes cannot hold her back:
Kamal Harris: Former Attorney General (served twice), former Senator, and the current US Vice President, Harris is a daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. She is set to change the course of history by reforming the damaged, highly divided US.
Sadaf Jaffer: Sadaf is the first Pakistani woman to serve as the mayor of Montgomery Town in New Jersey. She is also the first Muslim woman to hold this seat.
Zainab Ahmad: Born to Pakistani immigrant parents, Zainab is serving as a prosecutor with the US Justice Department. Earlier, she worked as an Assistant District Attorney in New York. She prosecuted several high profile cases of terrorism during her stint as ADA.
Neera Tanden: Nominated as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, Neera will make history as the first Indian and first woman of color to head this office. Currently, she is serving as the president of the Center for American Progress.
Vanita Gupta: Nominated as Associate Attorney General Department of Justice, Vanita hails from an Indian family. She is a civil rights attorney and President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
