A 23-year-old-man has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment for robbing and racially abusing a taxi driver in the UK. The ruling was announced 21 months after the incident took place.
The 23-year-old racist named Samuel Thomas Egerton of Grange Road, Cheddleton was sentenced to three years imprisonment on Thursday, 27 May. The Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, UK released the decree after finding him guilty of robbery and religiously aggravated fear and provocation of violence.
Speaking after the case, Chief Inspector of Staffordshire Moorlands, Thorley ensured that police was doing everything to make the area safe for everyone.
“The actions of this person do not reflect the majority of the Moorlands community who I know from the contact I have had are as shocked as myself,” he said.
The incident had originally taken place on August 4, 2019, when Egerton got into a taxi in Cheadle and was racially abusive to the taxi driver. He threatened the driver with violence and stealing his taxi and then demanded money from the taxi driver and ran off with £19.
Egerton also filmed himself subjecting the taxi driver to racist abuse and using Islamophobic slurs. He also stated that the taxi driver was getting terrorised by English people because he was a Muslim.
A recording of the incident went viral at the start of 2020, leading to a police investigation. Amidst national public outcry and political condemnation locally, Egerton was arrest three days later.
Samuel Egerton who had drunk about a litre of vodka at the time of the crime, turned up at court trying to hide his identity by pulling his hood over his face as he puffed on a cigarette.
The victimized taxi driver says he was already uncomfortable working nights and now he has completely lost his confidence.
Despite the relatively effective justice system, hate crimes and Islamophobia seem to keep spiking in the UK. Last June, a 53-year-old man was arrested for racially abusing a British-Pakistani driver in a viral video.
