Recently, following an attack on journalist Asad Ali Toor, fellow journalist Hamid Mir called out his attackers. ‘Googly News’ stated that Hamid Mir said offspring of ‘General Rani’ is behind the attack. That is how that elusive character of ‘General Rani’ returned to headlines once again. So who is this woman?
For those unfamiliar with the conspiracy of the most powerful woman’ of General Yahya’s regime, here is a brief:
Akleem Akhtar AKA General Rani was a ‘Madame’ running a brothel in Lahore. She is alleged to be the mistress of General Yahya, a claim she repeatedly denied. Legend has it she tamed former Pakistani President General Yahya Khan because of her expertise in arranging sex orgies.
She even somehow implied knowing about these orgies in a press conference she held against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. In the 70s, she even held a press conference claiming Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto tried to get her to testify before the Hamoodur Rehman Commission inquiry on the lost war of 1971. However, when she refused to sell out her ‘friends’ General Yahya and Governor Punjab G.M. Khar, Bhutto had her detained on charges of smuggling and running a prostitution den.
Akleem Akhtar said that she was stripped and tortured while she was detained in the Lahore Fort. She is said to have announced her intention to file a defamation suit against the officer on special duty at Bhutto’s residence. She even alleged to have financed Bhutto’s election campaign of 1970.
Among other things, she claimed to have possession of ‘photographic evidence of the misdeeds of several top government officials and politicians. Lady Akhtar even threatened to write a book exposing the corruption and ‘sinful activities of top officials, public figures, and their wives.
So who is this offspring of General Rani? Factually speaking, Adnan Sami Khan’s mother Naureen Sami Khan was General Rani’s niece. Naureen’s mother was the sister of Aqleem Akhtar. Whereas, Aroosa Alam is Adnan Sami Khan’s khala and Fakhre Alam is his second cousin.
Meanwhile, the Madame had six children. She passed away on 1 July 2002, at the age of 70, at Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore. She died of cancer.
