The Curios Case of Rising Hate Crimes Against Asian-Americans

One of the biggest challenges that the new Biden administration has to deal with is the ever-so-rising hate crimes against Asian-Americans.

Though, the government has raised security for the Asian diaspora and is taking action against the attackers, however, it will take a lot more than that to curb the anti-Asian sentiment.

There have been constant rallies and protest in favor of Asian communities facing hate crimes. One of such rallies was organized by Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community on the weekend in Washington D.c, also joined by local leaders to participate in a nationwide rally to voice an end to Asian hate.

The rally came on the day the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed yet another hate crime case that targeted Asians, making it the 10th hate crime charged by the office so far this year, and the third that was specifically tied to Asians.

Hours after the incident, two more men were charged with hate crimes targeting people of Asian descent.

The Surge of Anti-Asian Sentiments

Data proves that the hate crimes against Asian Americans have been slowly rising since 2016, some evidence suggests that the past year’s surge was triggered by a racist reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was fueled by former President, Donald Trump’s anti-Chinese rhetoric. Experts are convinced that Trump’s hateful tweets and comments against the community incited hate which now turns into deadly violence against Asian Americans.

To understand the trend, one doesn’t have to go far as a series of mass shootings and deadly attacks on people of Asian descend is quite visible. Take, for example, the Atlanta shooting where eight people at three different parlors in and around the US city of Atlanta were killed. Six of the eight victims Asian women. Followed by Atlanta shooting last week, ten more people were killed in a grocery store in Boulder, with police ‘failing’ to identify the motives behind the mass shootings.

The Bright Side of The Story

Despite all the hate and animosity against the community, the bright side of the story is that a majority of Americans still support them and stand beside them during troubled times. There have been a series of rallies and protests demanding strict action against those ‘psychopaths who have been trying to undermine the country’s peace and tranquility.

The activities are proof that the people of the United States, one of the world’s largest democracies, still value humanity above caste, creed, and race.
