Ophthalmology or Pawri? It’s About Time We Set Our Priorities Straight

The Land of Pure is enriched with massive talent. From doctors to scientists, to engineers to athletes to artists, the country has produced champions in every walk of life. Not only the sons of the soil but also its daughters leave no stone unturned to bring glory to their beloved country.

In the last article, we interviewed the Wonder Woman of Pakistan – Mahoor Shahzad – who recently won the national badminton champion for the fifth consecutive year. In yet another episode, we have brought you the story of Dr. Zubaida Sirang, a Pakistani Ophthalmologist who is making the waves worldwide.

Dr. Zubaida has made the whole country proud with her achievement in the field of Ophthalmology. Her latest book ‘Optics Made Easy’ has made it to the Book Authority’s list of ‘The Best Ophthalmology Books Of All Time’.

With this feat, Dr. Zubaida, an Eye Surgeon from Chitral has become the first doctor from Pakistan to have her book on BookAuthority’s list of ‘Best Ophthalmology Books Of All Time.’ She is the only Pakistani author on the list.

The book is written as a last-minute revision tool for ophthalmology students and the same book has also previously been one of the three best sellers on Amazon.

Having born in the Yarkhun area of Chitral, KP, Dr. Zubaida got her early education from her hometown before moving to Karachi for her higher studies where she completed a MBBS degree from the Aga Khan University, Karachi. Currently, she is completing her specialization in Surgical Ophthalmology in Ireland.

Zara Naeem

And then we have Zara Naeem – the brilliant Pakistani student who is making headlines internationally after topping the ACCA examination worldwide.

Zara, an ACCA student from Lahore has been declared the global prizewinner for scoring the highest marks in the Financial Reporting exam conducted in December 2020.

Zara Naeem, a student of SKANS School of Accountancy, credits this success to her father who always encouraged all the girls in the family to pursue their dreams. Zara’s father is an ex-serviceman and holds a master’s degree.

The girl who idolizes her father had the world talking about her commendable achievement, but little did we Pakistanis know about her or about Dr. Zubaida.

Why? Because we are busy making a pretty-faced ‘Pawry girl’ famous for a video that was meant for few thousand Instagram fans.

The irony is that we make tens of thousands of memes and funny social media posts to share a laugh that ultimately serves the cause for such social media influencers who do weird stuff to get attention. But little attention do we give to people like Dr. Sirang and Zara Naeem. They are our unsung heroes who need a word of appreciation from us, and not those Tiktokers and content creators.

We often criticize mainstream media for making such people famous by inviting them on TV shows – but is this the case? To my understanding, it is us who make people viral on the internet before they grab mainstream media’s attention.

It is about time we mend our ways and make the right choices on the internet that serve the national cause and not for entertainment.
