KP Makes Police Verification Mandatory for Marriage in Chitral

The provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has passed a resolution to protect women in Chitral from fake marriages. The resolution came in light of illicit and fraudulent marriages in Chitral.

Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Minority Affairs, Wazeer Zada introduced the resolution in the Assembly which was approved by the provincial government after legal proceedings.

According to Wazeer Zada, people from outside take advantage of the poverty of the people of Chitral and marry the girls here by paying money.

The resolution applies in case of marriage outside Chitral and it will examine the conduct, home, and family of those who come to Chitral for marriage.

Under the newly passed resolution, any man who wishes to marry a woman from Chitral will have to submit his personal information and character certificate to the local police who will verify and share the documents with officials and elders of the families.

A man will be allowed to marry the girl only after approval from police officials.

Wazeer Zada emphasized the need for this contract by highlighting the incidents of murder and abuse of Chitral’s women.

“If it is done with the intention of living a married life, then marriage is the most civilized and reliable relationship. But people take advantage of the poverty in Chital and most of these relationships are not with the intention of marriage.”

The police will check all the details of the conduct and home of anyone who wants to get married in Chitral and verify with the concerned District Police Chief and inform the Upper and Lower Chitral administration in writing.  In addition to making the marriage conditional on reputable persons, parents in both the districts of Chitral will also be required to refrain from marriage without confirmation.

MPA Wazirzada said that the police and administration of Chitral were already working in this regard and more laws needed to be enacted to curb illegal marriages.

Last year, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also introduced the first-ever Kalash Marriage Act for the overall protection of the Kalash tribe’s customs and traditions, especially those pertaining to marriages in the community. The Kalash Marriage Act will be presented in the assembly after Eid.
