In a bizarre incident in India, a Hindu bridegroom pretending to be a Muslim was caught redhanded right before the wedding. The man had attempted to disguise himself as a Muslim in order to get married of his choice.
The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where a young, apparently Muslim man was set to marry a Muslim bride. However, his act was exposed during the Nikkah ceremony.
According to the details, a Hindu youth from Siddharth Nagar had befriended a Muslim girl from the Kolhapur area on Facebook two years ago. Their friendship grew into love and the two wanted to take their relationship ahead and get married. But the girl suspected that her family might not allow her to marry a Hindu.
In the end, the girl decided to hide the truth, and the boy arrived at the girl’s house disguised as a Muslim with his family to marry the girl.
Unfortunately, the Cleric who was conducting the Nikkah ceremony, became suspicious when the groom was unable to pronounce Arabic matrimonial phrases properly. The cleric figured the Hindu bridegroom was lying and demanded a verification.
A search revealed a card with a picture of the bridegroom but the name was Hindu which revealed the lie staged by the bridegroom.
The girl’s family was infuriated and they captured the groom and his companions. The groom also received a beating before being handed over to the police. In spite of the matter being taken to the police, the girl kept insisting on marrying the same guy.
Inter-faith marriages are a common practice in India yet they often result in controversies. In December, a Muslim man was arrested for posing as a Hindu to marry a girl in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The man was booked under the new Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020.
