Indian police have launched a crackdown against Kashmiri students for celebrating Pakistan’s victory in India. A total of 9 students have been arrested under sedition charges so far including three Kashmiris.
Indian police claim that the students chanted slogans in support of Pakistan after winning the match. The students have been charged with hate speech and cyber terrorism.
The college has already canceled the admission of three Muslim Kashmiri students arrested by the police from Agra for praising Pakistani cricketers on their WhatsApp statuses. According to police, the students were arrested on Wednesday on a complaint by some members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
“These students were trying to escalate tensions, which could lead to further deterioration of the country’s environment,” the lawsuit against the students’ states.
The arrests were made in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In the state of Punjab, Kashmiri students were attacked by an angry mob for celebrating Pakistan’s victory. Moreover, five more cases have been registered in Agra, Bareilly, Budaun, and Sitapur against seven people for allegedly using indecent language against the Indian cricket team.
This is a recent example of the ongoing crackdown in India on Pakistan’s alleged victory over Muslims. Critics say that after India’s defeat, many Indians forgot their passion for the game and channeled their anger towards the Muslim minority.
Several Muslims in India have been in trouble since Sunday as they celebrated the victory of the Pakistan cricket team. After the match, a hate campaign was launched against India’s Muslim bowler Mohammad Shami. Users on social media called him a traitor and accused him of deliberately allowing the Pakistan team to run.
A school teacher in the desert state of Rajasthan lost her job for sharing a post on WhatsApp in celebration of Pakistan’s victory. Nafeesa Attari was also arrested by the police and forced to apologize publicly.
