India: The Hindu Woman Who Wished to Be Buried in Muslim Graveyard

As the covid cases spike in India, the otherwise neglected Muslim community of the country is making headlines due to an extraordinary display of humanity. Many vested interests are yet at play and trying to exploit the situation by stirring anti-Muslim sentiments in the Hindu dominant country.

Muslims’ response to the current mayhem is, however, completely in contrast to their traditional rigid portrayal in Indian media. From volunteering in burning funerals to opening mosques and madrassa schools into COVID centers, Muslims of India have been on the front line in tackling the worsening Covid situation.

Recently, another display of compassion took place in India when a Hindu woman was buried in a Muslim graveyard. The burial was performed as per the last wish of the deceased woman.

According to the reports, the deceased woman, Chaggan Bai Kishan, a resident of Pune, Maharashtra, told her daughter Laxmi to bury her as per the Muslim rites instead of cremation in case she died in the holy month of Ramzan. Chaggan Bai was suffering from arthritis and was undergoing treatment at home.

Despite the treatment, her condition deteriorated, and the woman breathed her last on Tuesday. Her daughter Laxmi has her mother buried in a Muslim graveyard to honor her mother’s last wish.

Chhagan Bai was laid to rest in a grave early Wednesday morning with the help of “Muslim Forum” President Anjum Inamdar and other local Muslims.

In the same state of Maharashtra, a Muslim philanthropist Shahnawaz Shaikh has also been lauded on social media as his foundation has been at the forefront of providing free oxygen and hospital beds to critical patients of Covid-19.
