If You Care About Human Rights Then You Need To Care About Kashmir: British MP

British Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Bristow has called out the Indian government for persisting human rights violations in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Bristow, a British Conservative Party politician, was raising voice for Kashmiri people in the house of Commons on Thursday.

The House of Commons of Britain had a two-hour long debate on human rights in Kashmir on 23rd September 2021. MPs from all political parties condemned India’s overt human rights abuses in Kashmir, the closure of Amnesty International and the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution.

Taking part in debate on the human rights in Kashmir, Paul Bristow highlighted that Kashmir is not just a Muslim issue as ordinary people in Britain also care about human rights including British-Indian diaspora population and said that “self-determination for these individuals is really important.”

“If it’s good enough Speaker for the people of Falkland Islands, its good enough for people of Gibraltar, then its good enough for the people of Kashmir,” said the conservative MP for Peterborough.

While addressing the British Parliament, Paul Bristow said that India has mislead the world by making human rights issue in Kashmir an anti-Indian argument. He reminded the house that being chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on British Muslims, it was his duty to raise voice for Kashmiri Muslims.

“I completely reject the argument of Indian government about Kashmir. What I don’t understand is how this ongoing human rights situation in Kashmir does not benefit India at all,” said Bristow.

The conservative MP asked India to reconsider its treatment of Kashmiris if it wants to take place as one of the great world powers. He said that the issue of human right abuses in Kashmir is what holds India back and makes people feel differently about Indians.

“I stand with the hundreds of millions of Indians across the world and the Indian diaspora that care about human rights too,” Paul said.
