IBA Student Expelled For Highlighting On-Campus Harassment Reinstated By IBA After Social Media Outrage

The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) has reinstated a student who was expelled for exposing “harassment” on the campus. Final year student Mohammad Gibrail’s admission has been restored unconditionally after a social media outcry.

The decision to reinstate student Muhammad Gabrail was taken by a disciplinary committee chaired by IBA Executive Director Dr Syed Akbar Zaidi. The committee had expelled Muhammad Gabrail during the last stage of his academic session.

Gabrail, who is in the final year of BS Economics, claims that he went to the finance department where he heard a man holding a supervisory post saying to female staff member “I will make you sit up till night.”

Gabrail reported the incident to university administration and when no action was taken, he decided to use social media platform. Afterwards, he made a post on Facebook where he highlighted the details of the incident.

The Economics student was asked to remove the Facebook post by the university administration and apologize. And when he refused to stand down, he was terminated while the harassment case was still in proceeding.

Gibrail’s case got the spotlight when several media outlets including The Blindside used their platforms to raise voice against IBA’s unjust and ruthless decision. The IBA administration came under fire on social media for firing the student, with users expressing their anger and accusing the institution of ignoring issues sensitive issues like harassment.

Social activist Jibran Nasir who presented Gibrail’s case, said that the credit goes to the students who stood firm against this decision.

“Gabrail is now a role model for many. We need to ensure transparent discussions on such issues instead of universities trying to brush off incidents,” he said.

Following Gibrail’s readmission, the IBA’s disciplinary committee has announced the formation of a student body to prevent such incidents in the institution. The committee has also decided to represent students in harassment cases to ensure a transparent inquiry into harassment cases.
