IBA Karachi Student Expelled For Protesting Against Harassment

A student of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi has been expelled by the administration for publicly highlighting an incident of harassment. The final year student had witnessed the incident and supported the female victim in lodging a formal complaint with the management.

The student, Muhammad Gibrail had filmed a video of the incident and reported it to the administration. When no action was taken, he posted the video on social media and took the path of protest.

Instead of taking action against the harasser, IBA expelled the BS Economics student only two months before completion of his degree when he reported on the incident of harassment of the woman on social media.

IBA Karachi started disciplinary proceedings against Gibrail after he posted the video on Facebook on August 25. Gibrail also mentioned that he heard the manager of the department screaming at a female employee and saying “I will make you sit here all night.”

While the investigation on harassment is still underway, the IBA administration made
a case of defaming the institution on Facebook instead of using “proper channels” against Gabriel according to a statement shared on IBA’s Facebook page.

The disciplinary committee has issued a formal letter stating that the institute dismisses student Muhammad Gibrail for breach of discipline.

“The said student posted the incident on social media without the consent of the victim woman. He was given multiple chances and counseled numerous times to reassess his actions,” the letter read.

Following Gibrail’s suspension, female students and employees feel that the next time many would simply look away if they encounter harassment. Gibrail’s lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir has also called out IBA for expelling a student for exposing harassment of a female staff member by a male staff member.

It may be recalled that earlier Director HR of IBA was also accused of harassing women. In addition, the issue of a female manager is also pending whose degree HEC is refusing to verify.
