History Made As Nepali Team Makes First Winter Ascent At K-2

The man had stepped on moon more than half century ago, but the K-2 peak was not climbed yet till the end of 2020. The Nepali team did the impossible on 16 January 2021 around 5 pm local time, as they made the record quest.

They were not only helped by the luck and weather but also led amazingly by their team leader, Chhang Dawa, who has made this amazing record of climbing all 8000 meter plus mountains in quickest time.

They had to climb the K-2, which is also known as Savage Mountain, in temperature of -50 degree Celsius. But fortunately for them, there was no wind on the peak, which does not happen often.

The Nepalese team had been on this mission for almost a month and today looked like a perfect day for them to make this climb. They had come within few meters from the peak with some hours left in the day and their fans were curious that it may not be easy for them to come back in the dark after the sunset.

One of the best things about this achievement is that one of them was injured but they all waited for remaining team-mates within 10 meters of the summit and climbed the historic peak together. This shows that they were united as a team, one of the biggest components in achieving anything.

It was obviously very hard, as experienced Spanish mountaineer Sergi Mingote became prey of the dangerous peak and fell down on his way backwards. He is not the first one to become victim of this adventure, as 84 mountaineers had previously died while trying to climb the K-2 in winters.

In next few days we also get another good news that some of Pakistani mountaineers will also climb the mountain. They are part of different teams with foreigners and may achieve this big task.

The Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan congratulated the historic team and hoped that more teams will achieve this, which will also do wonders for the tourism in Pakistan. The outsiders must get this message that Pakistan is a safe country for foreigners and they can come to Pakistan for these adventures.
