In an other incident of violence against minorities, a young Muslim vendor was mercilessly thrashed and looted by a group of Hindu men in India. The video of the brutal beating has gone viral on social media.
The incident took place on August 22 in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh. 25-year-old Taslim Ali was selling bangles for the festival of sawan (monsoon) when he was thrashed by a Hindu mob.
According to the reports. around 6 people approached Taslim and started beating him for selling bangles in “Hindu area” and allegedly using a “Hindu name”. The suspects also destroyed his merchandise and snatched his earnings.
“The accused first asked my name and started beating once I revealed it. They also robbed the Rs 10,000 that I was carrying and broke the bangles and other material that I had,” Taslim stated in the first information report.
The mob can also be heard making anti-Muslim slogans as they beat him in the video. One of the Hindus encourages his fellows to take whatever they want and beat the bangle-seller so that no Muslim ever comes to that area.
A case of rioting assault, robbery, intimidation, and trying to disturb communal harmony was registered by the victim. Among the main suspects, three have been arrested so far by the police.
Meanwhile the Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Narottam Mishra has asked people to not give “communal colour” to the incident. He said that the incident took place because the man had hidden his name and religion.
“He was using a Hindu name, though he belonged to a different community. He also had two different Aadhaar cards. He was selling bangles which our daughters wear and apply henna during sawan (monsoon) that’s how the altercation started,” the minister said.
After the incident, an Anti-Muslim protest was organised under the banner of Hindu Jagran Manchin in Indore. The extremist Hindu protesters waved saffron flags and raised slogans of “Hindustan me rahna hoga, Vande Matram kahna hoga” and anti-Pakistan slogans as well.
