First Muslim Woman Detained Under ‘Love Jihad’ Suffers Miscarriage

Muskan Jahan, a 22-year-old newly-converted Muslim girl, detained under Uttar Pradesh’s controversial law ‘Love Jihad,’ has suffered a miscarriage at a shelter home in Moradabad.

Muskan (Hindu name Pinki) is also the first woman to have been arrested under the new controversial law. She and her husband, Rashid, 27, were detained from the magistrate’s court in Moradabad, where the two had come to register their marriage on December 6.

Rashid was booked under section 3 of the new law and kept in an unknown jail of UP, while Muskan was sent to a shelter home, where she reportedly had a miscarriage on Saturday.

Ajay Gautam, the inspector of Kaanth police station, said that Muskan has been kept in a government shelter home and has been taken care of. Her statement will be recorded on Monday.

He, however, denied the media reports pertaining to miscarriage and termed them as fake news.

Muskan informed her mother-in-law of the development on the phone.

“I bled profusely last night and lost my baby,” Muskan told her mother-in-law with wet eyes.

Rashid’s mother believes that an injection was administered to her three-month pregnant daughter-in-law to abort the baby.

“Her crime is that she dared to marry a Muslim and converted to Islam.”

Muskan and Rashid fell in love and married in Dehradun in July. On December 6, the two visited the lawyer in the native town to get their marriage registered and were surrounded by members of a right-wing Hindu group called Bajrang Dal.

The two were then taken to the police station, where a case was registered against Rashid and his brother.

Jahan resisted the arrest and told the police that she was an adult and converted and married of her own free will.

Meanwhile, the Indian American Muslim Council has strongly condemned the victimization of the Muslim couple, noting that “the forced miscarriage of the 22 years old exemplifies the inhumanity of Hindu nationalism’s merciless drive for supremacy in India that has resulted in mob rule across the country.”
