Brave Minor Disavows Her Forced Marriage With A 50-Year-Old Man

A brave minor girl from Uch city of Southern Punjab stood up to her forced marriage with a man thrice of her age with the help of police on Saturday.

The girl,16, whose name has been concealed, was being married to a 50-year-old man in the Uch Sharif vicinity when the local police intervened and inquired the will of the child bride.

Reportedly, the police was tipped off that an underage marriage is underway in the locality. They raided the wedding function just before the Nikah ceremony.

Upon the police party’s arrival, the minor girl found her voice and told the police that the marriage was being done against her will.

The police then broke up the ceremony and took the 16-year-old was then under protective custody. The bridegroom and his family had to return without a bride. Interestingly, no case was registered against the two families for facilitating child marriage.

In a similar incident last year, Kashmore police raided a wedding function in Sukkur and saved a 10-year-old minor from marrying a 40-year-old man. The grandmother of the girl had allegedly sold the girl for Rs0.25 million.

The groom, who was arrested on occasion, said he was told that the orphan girl was around 17 years of age.
