In a significant first, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has allowed transgender people to appear in competitive examinations.
The historic decision came during the hearing of a petition filed by Faizullah, a transgender person hailing from Toba Tek Singh.
Faizullah, aka Faizy, had approached the top provincial court against the decision of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) after he was denied entry in an examination for the post of Urdu lecturer just because he was transgender.
He was told that the PPSC did not have any quota for transgender persons, which according to the petition, is a violation of the basic rights rules.
Faizullah’s lawyer had pleaded with the court to declare transgender persons eligible for appearing in PPSC exams.
The court resumed the hearing on Wednesday and directed the PPSC to allocate a special quota of seats for the trans community in every job opening that follows the order.
Reacting to the development, Faizullah thanked the honorable judge and media for supporting her cause. Faizy said that the decision will go a long way and will open new avenues for his community.
