A Look Into Black Widow, The Theatrical Return for Marvel Universe

After a delay of more than 14 months, “Black Widow” has finally been released. Marvel Studios hasn’t had a movie in theaters in two years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the long awaited feature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first woman superhero is of pivotal importance.

The Black Widow hit the cinemas on July 9 and has been the talk of screen-world since then. It is an American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is a family-focused action packed film, directed by Cate Shortland. Scarlett Johansson leads the story as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a Black Widow. The film also stars Florence Pugh and Stranger Things actor David Harbour.

The much-anticipated movie is getting mixed reviews from viewers and critiques. Some are calling it a “Good film but with flaws” while some believe the movie lies in a “Gray area.” Many even say that “it is too late for Black Widow.”

After hitting theaters on July 9, the movie saw a sharp drop in business during its second weekend. The film slid down 67% from its opening weekend and grossed a little over $80 million.

Even if it seems like Marvel’s latest superhero has failed to rescue movie theaters from their post-pandemic malaise, if you watch it with a marvel-fan’s eye, it was worth the wait after all.

The plot of the movie is set immediately after the events of Captain America: Civil War 2016. The film sees Black widow on the run and forced to confront a conspiracy tied to her past. It is also reveals that black widow is not the only one of her kind. During the series of such events, Romanoff encounters her sister figure, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh).

Action directing, space and timing of fight scenes, “marvelous” visuals and astonishing sounds combined with family sentiments make it a well-placed addition to the franchise. The entertaining and staunchly dramatic scenes also help keep the viewer’s eyes glued to the screen.

Despite all these complaints and all the squandered potential, Black Widow is worth adding to your must-watch list. Most importantly, because this film offers a “fitting ending” to story of Black Widow’s character which Avengers Endgame lacked.
