It’s a historic day for Pakistan. Mahoor Shahzad has become the first-ever Pakistani badminton player to qualify for the Olympics, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Badminton Federation (PBF) on Tuesday.
Mahoor earned the spot in the prestigious event on the back of “her endless efforts and hard work”, President of PBF Nisar Ahmed Shahwani and Secretary-General Wajid Ali Chaudhry said in a joint statement.
Going to the Tokyo Olympics will be another feather in Mahoor’s cap. It’s a great milestone in her journey, which started from her playing in the streets with her sister at an incredibly young age.
Mahoor got an early breakthrough at the age of 13 when she claimed the under-19 championship title. It was the first national-level tournament for Mahoor. Her victory was a special one, as she beat her sister in the final in straight sets.
Mahoor represented Pakistan in Asian Games at the age of 16 and also became the national champion at the age of 19.
She has been amassing the national championship titles for the past five years now and is the top-ranked player of Pakistan. In the world charts, she is currently ranked 117.
