The investigators in the Noor murder case are showing special interest in the call log of Asmat Jaffer, Zahir’s mother, who made 238 Calls in 30 Hours between 19 and 20 July. Over a dozen calls were made to the head of the private security firm, Trillium Information Security Systems. Noor’s murder took place between 6:30pm and 7:30pm on July 20 and at least one call was made by Asmat at 7:12pm to the head of the firm. Asmat who was in Karachi at the time of murder, also spoke to Zahir at 7:29pm for 46 seconds, when he informed her about Noor’s death.
After speaking to his mother, Zahir called up Trillium’s head at 7:30pm, and spoke to the man for over 5 minutes. Shortly after which, Asmat also spoke to the head of the firm at least thrice. Asmat communicated over 200 times with numerous people including her servant, neighbours, a few influential individuals, a security company, capital police, a welfare trust, four private firms, her immediate family members and periodically with her son Zahir Jaffer. Although, the purpose of the calls is yet unclear, it is suspected that parents of Zahir not only abetted but also made utmost efforts to destroy the evidence.
After the new revelations, Federal Government has placed names of all suspects of Noor’s murder on the Exit Control List (ECL). According to the Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid, all suspects linked to the murder of Noor Mukadam including the parents of prime accused Zahir Jaffer have been barred from leaving Pakistan. The decision to place the suspects on ECL was taken in a meeting held on Monday to discuss progress in the case.
The gruesome murder of 27-year-old Noor Mukadam sparked outrage in Pakistan, when she was beheaded in a gentry sector of Islamabad on July 20.Civil society members, human rights activists and lawmakers from across the world have condemned Noor’s brutal murder and called for retribution for her killing.
The investigations so far have revealed that Noor, who was daughter of Pakistan’s former envoy to South Korea, knew her murderer 30-year-old Zahir Jaffer and the two were friends since childhood. A couple days before Eid-up-Adha, Jaffer lured Mukadam to his home, held her hostage and tortured her for two days before beheading her.
Jaffer was arrested from the scene of crime and has been kept in police custody since. A first information report (FIR) was registered on the same day against Jaffer under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s father.
Jaffer’s parents and two household staffers were also named in the case for acquaintance in the murder. On Monday, the judicial remand of the parents and staffers was extended till August 23.
Bail application of Jaffer’s parents was also dismissed by the sessions court. The court noted that the suspects not only caused abetment but also made utmost efforts to wipe off evidence.
“The way the things have gone through leads me to observe that there is reasonable ground to believe that petitioners/accused have committed non-bailable offences. As such, I am not inclined to grant bail to the petitioners/accused and consequently, the instant post-arrest bail application is hereby dismissed,” the court judgement read.
