The Conservatorship is Draining the Mental Health of Britney Spears…#FreeBritneySpears

Britney Spears has been under a conservatorship since past 13 years, owing to her mental health condition. Britney’s father Jamie Spears took control over her decisions, deciding her financial as well as personal affairs.

Conservatorship is granted by the court, which gives a person the authority of making decisions for someone who is unable to make sound decision themselves, maybe due to some mental health condition, or due to presence of diseases like dementia in elderly people.

Britney Spears voiced against this conservatorship and expressed how she has been mentally drained because of this constant controlling and restraining element in her life. She cannot even take the most personal decisions like who she is going to date, for herself.

In 2007 Britney Spears began to behave in a way that could not be considered normal, and this change in her behaviour was felt right after her divorce from Kevin Federline was finalised. And not only that, she also lost the custody of her two children.

Her behaviour raised concerns for her mental health. In 2008 she was hospitalised and was exposed to various medications and mental therapy. This was the time when she came under conservatorship.

Ever since then her life has been under the control of her father, all her decisions are subject to her father’s will. Although she made screen appearances, released albums and never remained out of business in her years of conservatorship.

Britney’s fans back in 2009 protested against this conservatorship and the campaign revived after she expressed her distress against her father again in 2019. Her fans went to a fine extent to support her by submitting petitions to White House, with tens of thousands of signatures.

In a hearing in LA court room Britney explicitly stated  “I want to end this conservatorship without being evaluated” also she said “ this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good”. In her emotional address to the court, which lasted 20 minutes, she told how her life has been under strict control. She also expressed that she was forced to use birth pills in order to prevent her from pregnancy.

Many celebrities including Paris Hilton, Bette Midler and Miley Cyrus also support the idea that Britney should be released from this toxic and suffocating conservatory.
