A city court has convicted an ex-professor from the University of Karachi for harassing a female colleague on a social media website.
A special court judge awarded an 8-year sentence to the accused after conducting a trial over FIA’s investigation in an online harassment case on Wednesday. The court also imposed a fine of 1.1 million rupees on the accused person.
Dr Farhan Kamrani was found guilty of harassing a female teacher by creating a fake Facebook account in her name. The convicted teacher is a former assistant professor from the psychology department of the University of Karachi.
According to the details, a female teacher lodged a complaint with the FIA in 2016. She had claimed that Kamrani had set up a fake social media profile impersonating her.
The plaintiff also said that a link to a profile on the page of Greenwich University was posted which contained her fake pornographic pictures.
The FIA investigation revealed that the photos were also doctored by the accused Dr Farhan Kamrani who posted the immoral pictures on the plaintiff’s fake social media account.
Federal Investigation Agency reached the social media website for help and traced the accused to his residence. They also found evidence on his laptop that the Facebook account in question had been used on this computer.
After the identity of the harasser was confirmed, an FIR was registered and the assistant professor was arrested under Section 21 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016.
The case heard by a Karachi court, which handed an 8-year jail term and over a million rupees fine to the accused after charges against him were proved.
In February, The University of Karachi replaced the criminology department chairman over sexual harassment charges. Dr Ghulam Muhammad Burfat was removed from the post of chairperson on the recommendation of the anti-sexual harassment committee that was investigating a complaint filed by a female faculty member.
