Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Earl of Strathmore, Simon Bowes-Lyon has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman guest at his ancestral home, Glamis Castle, in Angus, Scotland.
According to the reports, he had forced his way into a woman’s room while she was sleeping and assaulted her back in February 2020. He was hosting a weekend event at his residence.
The earl was intoxicated at that time and reeked of cigarettes when he forced himself on the victim. The victim reported the incident to the police the next morning. 34-year-old Bowes-Lyson is on the sex offenders register now after been granted bail by the Dundee Sheriff Court.
According to The Sun, the monarch’s cousin called the woman he was assaulting “rude, mean, bad and horrible person” for fighting him off.
After managing to get rid of him the first time on the night of the assault, he came back and tried to grope her again.
While his sentence has been deferred, Bowes-Lyson faces five years in prison. Authorities have ordered the assessment of Glamis Castle to see if the place is suitable to keep the monarch’s relative.
Bowes-Lyson says he is ‘greatly ashamed’.
Clearly, I had drunk to excess on the night of the incident. I should have known better. I recognize, in any event, that alcohol is no excuse for my behavior. I did not think I was capable of behaving the way I did but have had to face up to it and take responsibility. My apologies go, above all, to the woman concerned, but I would also like to apologize to family, friends, and colleagues for the distress I have caused them.
The Metropolitan Police and Police Scotland have conducted the investigation of the incident.
