Sana Mir, the woman who changed the face of Pakistan Women’s Cricket History

Cricket was only a game for boys in Pakistan for decades, until a girl emerged from Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region and made many people change their thinking about the women cricketers.

People did not take the women’s team seriously in the past. But the girl, who started playing gully cricket with her brothers in early 90s, made debut for Pakistan in 2005 and presented her extra ordinary all round abilities very quickly.

In 2007 women’s world cup qualifier tournament, Sana Mir stunned many and helped Pakistan reach the final of tournament in South Africa. She was adjudged player of the tournament because of her amazing performance both with the bat and the ball.

Sana Mir was only 23 year old when she was given the big responsibility of captaining the young and inexperienced team. But she led the team from the front and won the all-important Asian Games Gold medal in China.

Sana Mir was a door opener for many girls, who were stopped by their parents from playing cricket, but after her efforts and achievements, many girls started playing cricket. She also introduced and helped younger players like Bismah Maroof and Javeria Khan, who want on to become legends for women’s cricket team.

Sana broke many records as she become first Pakistani player to take 100 wickets in One Day Internationals in women’s cricket. She also had the honour of being in the Number 1 bowler in the ICC rankings. Many of her records are still unmatched and she will always be remembered as the woman who changed the face of women’s cricket in Pakistan.
