Nowadays, due to the development of computer technologies and an increasing number of information technology users, cyber-attacks have become one of the most dangerous threats to national security. Unlike conventional attacks, cyber-attacks can be carried out from a distance and often cannot be detected in time, posing a significant risk to military and government data and information. There are multiple recent examples of unauthorized access to restricted bases and networks of many countries and organizations.
For instance, in the United States, the Department of homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) has been under attack by unknown hackers in late May – early June of 2026. This network was created to help share essential security-related information among private and government entities and respond to national security threats. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, sensitive but unclassified networks and information were temporarily disrupted due to unauthorized interference with servers and user accounts. This situation demonstrates that even “sensitive but unclassified” information is valuable to cybercriminals as it provides them with potential benefits.
Another example is associated with IEH Corporation one of the leading companies manufacturing specific connectors for the defense sector. The company’s website stated that hackers accessed IEH’s network, which is involved in producing military equipment, such as Patriot and THAAD missiles, airplanes, and spacecraft (“IEH Corporation Disclosure on Cyber Incident” para. 4). This situation shows that today there is a growing concern about cyber-espionage activities aimed at obtaining information about military technology.
Moreover, the intelligence alliance Five Eyes (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States) has reported detecting a surge in state-sponsored cyber-intrusions targeting military personnel, contractors, governments, and enterprises. In particular, many cyber-attacks are initiated through deception, social engineering, and phishing emails attempting to entice targets to provide private information or install malicious software on their computers. Thus, it is evident that today cyber-espionage activities are sophisticated, unpredictable, and hard to detect.
The l issues mentioned above, in particular, the unauthorized breach of the US Homeland Security Information Network, should be considered a crucial threat to national security as military data and information are essential assets for any country. Therefore, it is necessary to implement advanced measures for cyber protection, such as Zero Trust, multifactor authentication, monitoring of network traffic, and others. In addition, it is essential to ensure the security of defense industrial base assets, as one of the recent cyber-espionage incidents demonstrates that defense companies are potential weak links in the military supply chain. As a result, cyber-resiliency efforts should be implemented not only by government entities but also by private organizations, such as those mentioned above, IEH Corporation, and many others.
Unauthorized theft or breach of sensitive military and government information is a significant threat to national security on a global scale. It is essential to develop and implement new measures for cyber protection and resilience initiatives at both national and international levels. In particular, the United States Department of Homeland Security, the Australian Signals Directorate, the UK National Cyber Security Center, and other national government agencies need to intensify collaboration with intelligence allies, such as Five Eyes, to protect and secure military networks and data from potential cyber-espionage activities.
