Miley Cyrus has sparked speculation about a possible name change on social media as she prepares to enter a new musical era.
The “See You Again” singer appeared to make a subtle change to her social media identity on August 31, removing “Cyrus” from her handle and simply going by “Miley.” She also shared a red-and-black filtered photo of herself with the simple caption, “MILEY.”
The timing quickly caught fans’ attention, especially as Cyrus prepares to release her upcoming album, Bass Persuades, on September 18.
In a September 1 Instagram post, the Grammy-winning singer reflected on the meaning behind the album’s title and described music as something that can capture emotions and experiences throughout life.
“Music takes hold of us,” Cyrus wrote, explaining that music can be powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong, while reflecting everything from happiness and heartbreak to the moments in between.
The new era comes after a period of significant personal change for Cyrus. She became engaged to musician Maxx Morando in December, following the release of her previous album, Something Beautiful.
During a December appearance on Good Morning America, Cyrus admitted that she was completely surprised by the engagement, despite being someone who usually likes to have control over every situation.
She also described the engagement as part of a period of major personal growth, saying she had experienced significant changes over the previous four years and wanted to share her dreams with someone who encouraged her to pursue them.
Meanwhile, some fans have speculated that Cyrus’ apparent decision to drop her surname could be connected to her relationship with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, following their well-publicized family tensions.
However, Miley previously said that the family had worked through its differences. During a 2025 appearance on the Reclaiming podcast, she revealed that several members of the family had stopped speaking to one another at one point but had eventually resolved their issues.
Reflecting on her parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus’ divorce in 2022, Miley said the experience taught her the importance of addressing family problems rather than allowing them to build up.
With new music on the way and a possible change to the name she uses publicly, Miley Cyrus appears to be embracing a fresh chapter—both personally and creatively.
