The main suspect in the killing of a 15-year-old orphaned boy in Multan has died in an alleged police encounter near Bahawalpur, police officials said.
The suspect, identified as Tauqeer Nazir, had allegedly run over the boy, Waseem Abbas, with a car on Monday. The teenager reportedly wanted to leave his work because of the suspect’s alleged inhumane treatment.
According to District Officer of the Crime Control Department (CCD) Irfan Akbar, Tauqeer was arrested after the incident and presented before a court. A judicial magistrate granted police four-day physical remand, but the suspect subsequently escaped.
Irfan Akbar said police attempted to stop two motorcyclists on the Northern Bypass in Bahawalpur. The suspects allegedly opened fire while fleeing. During the exchange of fire, Tauqeer was killed by shots fired by his own accomplice, while the other suspect escaped.
The suspect had also been assaulted by lawyers while being presented in court, according to the report.
What Happened to Waseem Abbas?
CCTV footage from a private housing society in Multan showed the 15-year-old boy being chased before a car ran him over, killing him at the scene.
The footage from multiple cameras reportedly showed the suspects pursuing the boy and deliberately driving the vehicle into him, contradicting attempts to portray the incident as an accident.
According to Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq, Waseem lived at an orphanage run by an NGO and had been sent to Tauqeer seven days before the incident to learn electrical work.
Police said Tauqeer took contracts for electrical work in various buildings and had previously provided training to children from the same orphanage.
Investigators said the boy was pursued and run over after he decided to leave the work.
