After Decades Of Sky-Sexism, Ukrainian Air Hostesses Are Ditching Skirts And Heels For Trousers And Sneakers

Ukraine’s SkyUp Airlines has decided to replace the traditional uniforms of its flight attendants with new comfortable ones. The air hostesses can now wear trousers and sneakers instead of skirt suits and high heels.

SkyUp is one of the relatively new and cheapest airlines in Europe and one of the largest in Ukraine. This dress code change is not the first in Europe, but certainly first in Ukraine.

For decades, airlines have taken advantage of the femininity of women in expanding their business, often ignoring their basic comfort and health. The image of an air hostess is associated with more sexual attraction than practical help during the flight.

In spite of their young ages, many of the female staff of airlines suffer from limb diseases and joints diseases. Due to this and many other reasons, a number of other airlines have introduced changes to their dress codes that were previously considered a standard in the industry.

SkyUp Airlines has gone one step further in this regard. High heels, skirts and tight pants have been discarded and replaced with tracksuits, joggers, open orange jackets and trousers.

“The job of a flight attendant is not so romantic. It is a challenging job. Female flight attendants do not want to look sexually attractive and entertaining,” said Mariana Gregorsch, head of marketing at SkyUp.

When SkyUp surveyed its staff, it found that female employees were fed up with their high-heeled shoes, tight pants and skinny skirts. Many of its flight attends were visiting padologists for foot treatment because wearing high-heeled shoes constantly damages toes and toenails.

Moreover, the “classy” dress code of air hostesses is a problem for emergency situations during flights too. In case, the plane makes an emergency landing on the water and one of the crew has to rush through it to open the exit door, will a flight attendant on high heels and tight skirt be able to do that?
